Come and celebrate more than a decade of the Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) research and innovation through a special exhibition and showcase of products and projects advanced by CASL. Meet our scientists and administrators and see how you can be a part of some of the most cutting edge research in language science. Learn about ways your organization can get involved.

About CASL

September 11, 2001, caused a dramatic shift in government priority and need. As the Department of Defense (DoD) grappled with new challenges, comprehensive language preparedness became a critical necessity. Founded in 2003 as a DoD university affiliated research center (UARC) with a nationally recognized research staff, the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is the first and only national resource dedicated to addressing the language needs of the Intelligence Community (IC).

Demos & Exhibits

What to expect when you attend the CASL Innovation Showcase... This and so much more!

REVEAL 360°

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) recently teamed with the university’s Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) to create a cinematic virtual environment for advanced language training.

Did You Mean...? (DYM)

CASL is creating and enhancing resources for language, enabling analysts to work at both a higher proficiency level and with more versatility with respect to language variety and alphabet.

Regional Proficiency Assessment Tool (RPAT)

The Regional Proficiency Assessment Tool (RPAT) was
commissioned to provide an understanding of the regional proficiency of the military workforce. As developed and prototyped by CASL, the RPAT will allow agencies to assess, track, and manage the regional proficiency (RP) of its personnel.

Gateway Languages Database

The Gateway Languages Database will allow queries by individual language, by language pair, or by country/georegion.  This will help determine which langauges are optimal for cross-training, leveraging existing expertise and enabling an organization to respond faster and more efficiently when necessary.

LanguageNation

LanguageNation aims to accelerate the acquisition of language by human learners, supported by human language technology (HLT) and data analytics. It will provide anywhere, anytime, on-any-device language learning.

Cyber Aptitude & Talent Assessment (CATA)

A new test that can identify candidates best suited for cyber security operator training. The test focuses on critical thinking abilities and other foundational abilities necessary for success in cyber warfare operations.
